The current vogue for VR and attendant technologies has left a few gaps in the market for other functions of the traditional headset, and the new PolyEyes system appears to have an even more specific application in its widely-distributed sights. The idea of the Hammerhead system is to give you an entirely enlarged field of vision. Carefully positioned camera mirrors give the lucky viewer a stereoscopic reach which, so say the device’s designers, will rival that of a chameleon. Exact applications for this technology have not yet been announced, although the video below does give a rather intriguing sense of the headset’s effects, which right now seem equally impressive and disorienting.
One thing’s for sure, it does look wonderfully bizarre, with early users comparing it with everything from a hammerhead shark, to the 1960s batmobile, and a giant plastic model of a black stingray.
