Not content with their stranglehold on the almost-free music sharing market, tune streaming behemoth Spotify will be rolling out its new video service this week on select platforms. First to get a look will be Android, followed by iOs and others in weeks to come.
Content will be curated from the usual suspects, with major television and media groups – BBC, Comedy Central, ESPN – leading the charge. There’s been little confirmation of how this content will be presented, although there has been some talk of bundles in keeping with Spotify’s playlist ethos.
The big elephant in the room is, of course, how the burgeoning app stands a chance of competing with YouTube, as the Google-owned video giant is so many streets ahead of any other such platform, it might as well be a city planet unto itself. This is, quite literally, one to watch.
