In an announcement that will have internet safety advocates a little happier this week, Google have confirmed that they now encrypt around 75% of their traffic. The disclosure, released in their latest Transparency Report, points to a greater emphasis on internet independence and a pushback against the mass surveillance that Google has fought from the US government, among others.
Up from closer to 50% last year, the figure of 75% is a notable and laudable achievement but, as Engadget points out, there may well be an uphill battle for that remaining 25%, as the United States has a frankly terrifying degree of unprotected data flying through the air at any one time, 95% of which comes from mobile devices.
