In a move many didn’t expect to happen so abruptly or so soon, instant message communications monolith WhatsApp has made each and every one of its digital transmissions encrypted end to end.
In basic terms, this simply means that only the sender and the receiver of any given message can see and receive its contents, but in a wider view, this can be taken as the latest in a series of moves by Big Tech to show their users – and their governments – that they take privacy, cybersecurity and snooping seriously.
Whatsapp didn’t detail their exact intentions but did state that they simply wished to make their communications more secure, but in the wake of the Apple FBI case, we may start to see a sea change in opinion and action when it comes to protecting identities and messages online.
